Description
This building is a house, now used as solicitors' offices, with attached screen walls. It likely dates from the late 17th century and early 18th century, incorporating three distinct phases of construction, with 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of painted brick and timber frame with brick infill, and has plain tile roofs.
The main block is two storeys high with two bays, and features a gabled projection to the rear. A narrower, timber-framed wing extends to the rear, two rooms deep. A side entrance is present. The front of the building has two 16-pane sash windows on each floor, with glazing bars in wooden architraves. Behind a parapet rises a hipped roof with tall external end stacks, one offset, and a taller gabled roof with a cross-ridge stack further back. The attached screen walls on either side have round arches, the one on the left featuring a vermiculated keystone.
The left return shows differently-coursed brickwork in the rear bay of the main block, both sections having stepped dentilled eaves. The timber-framed wing on the left has a rear outshut. The timber framing is of poor quality, with posts, a mid-rail, a wall-plate, and spindly studs. The roof of this wing is half-hipped on the left and has 20th-century skylights. A main entrance is located on the right return.
Inside, the front left room contains an 18th-century fireplace with a wooden architrave featuring fluted pilasters, a frieze with end paterae, and a moulded shelf. The rear bay's 18th-century stone fireplace surround has pilasters, a moulded cornice on blocks, and a mantleshelf.
