Description

The barn at Pound Farm is a Grade II listed structure dating from the late 17th century. It features a timber frame set on an ironstone base, clad in weatherboarding, and topped with a pegtiled roof that has a gabled design on the east side and a half-hipped style on the west. The barn is arranged in seven bays, running from west to east, with a cart entrance that was originally located in the third bay from the east, and a south aisle that encompasses the western four bays.

On the exterior, the north side includes double cart doors along with some 20th-century glazed openings. The south side has had two 20th-century garage doors added to the eastern three bays. Inside, the wall frame features a midrail with vertical members in the lower section, complemented by patterns of curved tension braces and vertical members above. The third bay from the east originally had a cart entrance, with cart doors that have since been replaced with softwood. The upright posts are unjowled, supporting slightly arched tension braces that connect to the tiebeams, along with angled queenstruts and a butt purlin roof that includes diagonal wind braces and original rafters without a ridgepiece. The south aisle contains additional purlins, and the central part of the barn has been partitioned, with weatherboarding on the eastern side and vertical boarding on the western side.

Historically, the earliest part of Pound Farmhouse was constructed around 1600, with a parlour wing added in 1687, which is dated. It is believed that the barn was built around the same time as the new wing of the farmhouse. Sales particulars from 1958 indicate that prior to that date, Pound Farm was owned by the Park Hatch Estate, which belonged to the Duke of Westminster. This barn is a well-preserved example of a late 17th-century timber-framed structure, contributing to the overall character of the farm group.
