Description
The Jekyll Memorial, built around 1932, is located approximately 5 metres southeast of the southeast corner of the Church of St John the Baptist in Busbridge. Designed by Edwin Lutyens for Herbert and Gertrude Jekyll, the memorial is constructed from ashlar and features a square enclosure with a low plinth wall.
From the front plinth rise three plain, shouldered slabs with projecting bases. The slabs commemorate Gertrude Jekyll, who died in 1932 (on the left), Sir Herbert Jekyll, who also died in 1932 (on the right), and Agnes, the wife of Sir Herbert, who passed away in 1860. The rear and part of the side walls have panels that each feature two pulvinated rails. The top rail is inscribed with the following text: "In remembrance of Herbert and Gertrude Jekyll long time dwellers in their homes in Munstead who passed to their rest in the Autumn of 1932. Their joy was in the work of their hands: their memorial is the beauty which lives after them. Also of Agnes Jekyll whose spirit ever dwelt in loving kindness." Below this inscription is a memorial to Francis Jekyll, who died in 1965, the only son of Herbert and Agnes.
