Description
The Wernher Mausoleum, built around 1912, is located to the north of the Greek Orthodox Church of St Charalambos in East Hyde. It was erected by the Wernher family of Luton Hoo to honor Sir Julius Wernher, who passed away on May 21, 1912. This rectangular mausoleum is constructed from ashlar limestone and designed in the Decorated Gothic style, resembling a chantry chapel.
The structure features three steeply-pitched gabled panels on each side, adorned with crockets and finials, and has cusped openings that are sealed with iron grilles. Canopied niches at the corners house statuary. The main inscription on the south end commemorates Sir Julius Wernher, stating, "To the dear and revered memory of Sir Julius Wernher, Baronet, born April 9th, 1850, died May 21st 1912. The family vault of Sir Julius Wernher, Bart." There are also brief inscriptions dedicated to other family members.
