Description
The King Edward's School War Memorial is a memorial cross made of Portland stone, situated on a green area at the eastern side of the school, facing Petworth Road. The memorial features a stone wheel cross atop an octagonal shaft, which is mounted on an octagonal plinth that rests on a three-stepped octagonal base.
The south face of the plinth has an incised inscription that reads: "THIS MEMORIAL IS ERECTED IN AFFECTIONATE REMEMBRANCE BY OLD BOYS OF THE SCHOOL AND THEIR FRIENDS." On two of the east faces of the plinth, the years "1914" and "1919" are carved in relief. The final eastern face displays the inscription in relief: "LIVE THOU FOR ENGLAND WE FOR ENGLAND DIED." The north face features another incised inscription that states: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." On the west face of the plinth, the school shield is carved in relief. Additionally, around the top step of the base, the following is carved in relief: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE OLD BOYS AND MASTERS OF THE SCHOOL WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-19."
