Description
King Edward's School is a school building constructed in 1867 by Sidney Smirke, with later extensions by G. D. Sykes. It is built of red brick featuring brown brick diapering, a stone plinth band, and stone dressings, with Bathstone angle quoins. The building has hipped plain tiled roofs and stands three storeys tall, with three stone-coped stacks on either side of the center.
The design is symmetrical, featuring projecting stone string courses above the plinth, ground floor, and cornice of the second floor. A stone-coped parapet crowns the building, adorned with square stone newels. The end pavilions project slightly and each has one sash window on every floor, with the second-floor window consisting of nine panes. All windows are framed with moulded stone chamfered surrounds. The shaped gables over the end pavilions are decorated with escutcheons.
The main façade includes six bay ranges with similar windows under cambered heads on the ground and first floors. A prominent entrance bay features a shaped gable at the parapet stage, a clock face on the front, and a modillioned cornice below. An arched stone-dressed niche in the Doric Order contains a statue. The entrance is flanked by projecting piers with paired panelled pilasters that support an entablature across the ground floor. Stone-carved panels on the sides of the entrance bay depict "Christ in the Garden" and a figure of Athena.
Between the piers are paired sashes, and there is a rusticated and key-stoned arched through-way with voussoirs above and a brick barrel vault behind, extending two bays deep with doors in the return walls. On the left-hand return front, there is one bay with an additional bay set back. A stone portico on the ground floor features a keyed and arched door surround with angle pilasters. To the left, there is a three-storey 20th-century brick range connected by fire escapes to the front range, which is not of special interest.
