Description

Nos. 108 to 112, West Street comprise a range of buildings dating from the 17th century to the late 18th century. Originally a single timber-framed building, once The Swan Inn, it was divided into three separate houses by the 1680s. Traces remain of a direct connection between Nos. 108 and 109 in the upper floor and roof spaces.

No. 108 has a stuccoed front with an eaves cornice and a slate roof. It is two storeys high with two bays. The original glazing bars are intact and a plate glass shop front is present; remnants of an older shop front fascia and cornice may remain. No. 109 features a tile-hung gable, a tiled roof, and an old red brick chimney stack. It is two storeys high with an attic, containing a two-light attic casement with leaded panes and three windows with glazing bars on the first floor. A plate glass shop front is on the ground floor. No. 110 has a tiled roof and a red brick facade. It is two storeys high with two windows. A shop front is on the left-hand side, with a yard entry on the right-hand side. Timber framing is visible in the passageway.

No. 111, dating to the 19th century, is three storeys high with one bay and a slate roof. It has a modern shop front in a Georgian style. No. 112 was constructed between March and August 1799 and features a tiled mansard roof with two boxed dormers. It is two storeys high with an attic and presents three bays with two three-light sash windows on the ground floor. A modern Georgian-style shop window with intact glazing bars is present, flanked by doors. The front is red brick above.

These buildings, along with Nos. 108 to 122 (consec), form a group of buildings, incorporating Nos. 1 to 9 (consec) (including No 1A) and Nos. 1 to 6 Town Hall Buildings, the Borough, and Nos 1 and 77 Castle Street.
