Description
Jesses is an early 20th-century house built by local architect-builder Parbury. It reflects the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement through its simplicity and attention to detail. The entrance front is irregular and consists of three bays, with two storeys on the sides and a taller centre featuring an attic and a projecting catslide over the porch. The house has hipped tiled roofs, dull red Sussex brick, and tiled dripmoulds. The windows are leaded casements with two, three, and four lights. There is a pentice extension on the left, a half-octagonal bay on the right return, and a garage extension on the right. The rear elevation is tile hung above, with oversailing first floors in the gabled outer bays, and a chimney tucked into the right inner angle formed by the design. The house is significant as the home of Arnold Dolmetsch from 1917 until his death in 1940; he was a pioneer of the early music revival and founded a factory for making early musical instruments.
