Description
Kemnal is a building constructed in 1888 by R. Norman Shaw, designed in a vernacular revival style that gives the impression of an old house that has been added to over the years. The right wing features a 16th-century style with a jettied first floor on the return and a gable end facing the road, which oversails on solid brackets. The upper part is tile-hung, while the lower part is brick, topped with a steep tiled roof. The center section is two stories of brick, and to the left is a one-story and attic bay with a catslide roof that sweeps down over the projecting ground floor, with dormers above. The building has very tall brick chimneys, and the design echoes that of an older structure with brick re-casing. A small stuccoed section in the inner right angle suggests a Jacobean addition. The windows are leaded casements. Drawings for this house can be found in the Royal Academy collection.
