Description

The Farnham War Memorial is a war memorial designed by architect W C Watson and dedicated in 1921, with a subsequent dedication for the Second World War added later.

Constructed from Portland stone, the memorial features a three-stepped base topped by two hexagonal plinths. The upper plinth supports a tall, tapering shaft adorned with a tracery cross patonce.

On the front face of the upper plinth, there is an inset stone plaque with relief carvings of the Pelican-in-her-Piety and the Farnham coat of arms, along with the inscription ‘IN GRATEFUL MEM-/ ORY OF THE MEN/ OF FARNHAM WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR/ THEIR/ COUNTRY/ WHAT I/ GAVE I HAVE’. This plaque is flanked by the dates ‘1914’ and ‘1918’, with the dates ‘1939-1945’ below. The other faces of the upper plinth display plaques bearing the names of those who fell in the First World War, one of which is a replacement from 2017. The front face of the lower plinth has an inscription that reads ‘AND OF/ THE MEN AND WOMEN OF/ FARNHAM WHO LOST THEIR/ LIVES BY ENEMY ACTION IN/ THE SECOND WORLD WAR’, flanked by the dates ‘1939’ and ‘1945’, while its other faces list the names of the Second World War fallen.
