Description

Llanaway Cottages is a pair of cottages built in 1875 for Miss C Hallam and Mrs C Birt, with some alterations. The ground floor is constructed of purplish-red brick in English bond, featuring red-brick dressings, while the first floor is tile-hung with decorative bands of fish-scale tiles. The roof is covered with concrete tiles. The cottages are two storeys high and consist of four bays, designed in the Vernacular Revival style. They have wooden mullioned and transomed windows with casements and small-paned upper lights, and the first floor has a battered base with wood-bracketed coping.

On the garden elevation, there are four three-light windows on each floor, with the ground floor center windows being 20th-century replacements, likely replacing oriel windows. The first-floor windows are positioned below half-hipped gables. A stone plaque on the ground floor displays the date and names of the patronesses. The half-hipped roof features two cross-ridge stacks with battered bases.

The right return has two bays, with the right bay containing a diagonally-boarded door (for No 13) in a chamfered surround, topped with a pent canopy on shaped wooden brackets and a two-light window above. The left return is similar but includes a small inserted window on the first floor, to the left. The rear of the cottages has two central bays that project, featuring segmental-arched windows on the ground floor and two-light windows above, with a half-hipped roof and a back door for each cottage in the return. The outer bays have projecting WC and wash-kitchen ranges. These cottages are one of three pairs built around a central garden.
