Description

Ornamental Cottages is a row of three cottages built in the late 19th century. The cottages feature red brick on the ground floor, with timber-framing on the first floor of the left cottage and ornamental tile hanging on the first floor of the right cottage. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The design includes a 'hall' range with two cross wings and additional lower projecting wings at each end, which have hipped roofs.

The cottages are two storeys high and consist of six bays. On the ground floor, the 'hall' range projects forward under a pentice roof, featuring a balustered porch on the right and paired eight-pane sash windows with splayed sills beneath segmental gauged brick arches on the left. The cross wings have similar windows, while the smaller projecting wings have boarded doors with balustered panels on either side.

On the first floor, the 'hall' range has three sliding sash windows with glazing bars. The left cross wing features corbels supporting a moulded bressumer for its jettied upper storey, along with paired casement windows with glazing bars. Above, there is a projecting gable with a king-post truss and raking struts arranged in a herringbone pattern, and the gable has barge-boards on shaped brackets. The right cross wing has a tripartite sash window with glazing bars and is tile-hung throughout, also with barge-boards on shaped brackets. The projecting wings at the ends are timber-framed on the left and tile-hung on the right, each featuring a corner window with glazing bars. The 'hall' range has axial stacks with cornices that include blue brick bands.
