Description

Romilly Cottage is a pair of cottages dating to the 16th or 17th century, though significantly altered in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Originally timber-framed, they are now roughcast brick with tile-hung gables and a plain tile roof. The cottages are one storey high with an attic, and have four bays. The windows are 19th and 20th century additions with leaded lights. A stone plinth is visible at the base. Number 139, on the left, has a boarded door with a side-light in the right bay, and a three-light window to the left. Number 141 has a late-20th century small-pane glazed porch with half-glazed doors and a hipped tile roof, a bay window to the right with a similar roof, and a three-light window to the left. A continuous tiled pentice runs along the ground floor, and the walling above has applied timber framing. Four gabled dormers are present, each with a two-light window, tile-hung cheeks and gable, and bargeboards. A slate-roofed extension on the right side and a late-20th century single-storey addition set back on the left are not of special interest. At the rear of number 141, a single bay of timber framing remains, with old brick infill, with the rail and wall plate continuing across the rear of number 139. Inside number 139 are some 19th century ledged doors with long hinges, and two old rafters in the roof. The cottages formerly served as estate cottages on the Losely Estate and are included for group value. The party wall between the two cottages is possibly timber-framed.
