Description
Bourne Mill is a complex building dating from the 17th, 18th, and later centuries, and which has been modernized, currently serving as an antique shop and club. It is an irregular block, with parts rising to four and other parts to three storeys. The east front features a mix of weatherboarding in the upper section over a lower brick storey, with a mansard roof covered in old tiles and irregular leaded casements. The south front, facing the road, is in three distinct sections. The right-hand gable is four storeys high with an attic, and the upper portion is tile-hung above a two-storey brick base, featuring four stepped brick buttresses. It has one four-light attic casement, three casements on the third floor, two-light casements on the first and second floors in the outer bays, and a pair of small, modern casements on the ground floor. The central section, of 18th-century origin, was altered in the early 19th century and rises to the parapet with brick coping. It has two square sash windows on the second floor, two four-pane windows with stucco surrounds on the first floor, and a two-light leaded casement to the right. The ground floor has a three-light window with a stucco surround, and a 18th-century five-panel door within a stucco surround with console brackets and a cornice, located to the right of centre. A modern ledged door with a side light is situated in the lower right corner. Behind the street front is a timber-framed wing with external timber-framed panels visible. The left-hand section is of 18th-century colour-washed brick, with a half-hipped gable roof, one attic casement, a sash window on the first floor, and two modern casements and a half-glazed door on the ground floor. The listing notes that several other local mills – Willy Mill, Hatch Mill, High Mill, and Bourne Place – are also listed, despite being primarily 18th-century buildings later than Farnham’s peak as a corn market. These mills, along with Bourne Mill, are considered good examples of their type, featuring attractive mill houses and worthy of preservation for their historical significance and architectural interest.
