Description

Hatch Mill and House, now occupied by the West Surrey College of Art and Design, is an L-shaped block dating from the late 18th century. The mill house is two storeys high, constructed of brick with flat moulded eaves and a slate roof, featuring flanking chimneys. The first floor has three windows, each four panes wide, while the ground floor has two windows. The central entrance is a six-panel door with reeded panels and an arched fanlight in a half balloon pattern, set within a doorcase that includes reeded pilasters, a broken entablature, and a narrow cornice hood.

Adjacent to the house is a long range of mill buildings that extend at right angles to the left side. This two-storey structure is also made of brick, with a half-hipped old tile roof and irregular modern casements and doors. It has roughly seven bays, with the original wing of the mill likely extending to the gable end that comprises the eighth bay from the southeast end. A continuous painted band runs across the front of the building. The mill has undergone significant alterations, including a later extension to the northwest and behind, and it is no longer in use as a mill.

Hatch Mill and House, along with Willey Mill, Bourne Mill, High Mill, and Bourne Place, are all listed buildings. While most of these mills, except Bourne Mill, are 18th-century structures and were built after Farnham's peak as a major corn market in southern England, they are all notable examples of their type, featuring attractive mill houses that are important for their historical and architectural significance.
