Description

This is an 18th-century range of buildings, originally barns and stables, later converted into living accommodation. The buildings consist of Nos. 1, 2, 3 & 4 Waverley Close, Nos. 5, 6, 7 & 8 Broomleaf House, Alexandra Barn and Alexandra House, forming a long, L-shaped range culminating in a three-sided courtyard. The buildings are constructed of brick with a projecting plinth, and feature a string course at first-floor level and a moulded brick cornice. The roof is hipped and covered in old tiles. The elevation includes five windows with architrave frames on the first floor, and four similar windows on the ground floor. A former 6-panel door has been altered to a half-glazed window within an arched, panelled reveal. The doorway is surmounted by a delicate fanlight and a doorcase of fluted Doric pilasters, with a cap moulding extending around the reveals and across the doorhead, topped with a narrow architrave over the arch and a broken entablature with a pediment. A high, modern brick wall with segmental brick piers and moulded stone coping encloses the complex; the wall has been rebuilt in parts due to road widening. The entire group is considered picturesque.
