Description
Smiths Cottage is likely a 17th-century timber-framed building that was largely refronted and extended in the early 19th century. The front elevation is constructed from Bargate stone rubble with ironstone chip galleting. The left side is of red brick in a Flemish bond, while the right side features stone rubble to the ground floor and tile hanging above. The rear elevation reveals an exposed box frame with stone rubble infill. A brick lean-to extension, constructed in both rat trap and stretcher bond, adjoins the rear. The roof is tiled, with a brick chimneystack at each end. The cottage is two storeys high with three windows. Most of the windows are early 19th-century wooden casements; four windows retain diamond-paned glass with leaded lights. A central, gabled dormer is finished with wooden bargeboards. The rear includes 20th-century metal-framed casements. According to a report, the interior features a staircase with a lamp shelf, a clasped purlin roof with two Queenstruts, a walk-in cupboard with shelves held by wide pegs, old window catches and hinges. The building was formerly a blacksmith’s house.
