Description

Smithwood House is a late 18th-century house that was extended in the 19th century and was formerly divided into a house and cottage. It is constructed of brown brick with a hipped roof covered in plain tiles. The house has two storeys, moulded brick eaves, and end stacks at the rear. The front has five bays with nine-pane glazing-bar sash windows on the first floor and four two-pane glazing-bar sash windows on the ground floor, all with gauged brick heads. The central door is made of six panels, with fan tracery in the transom light above. A flat-roofed porch features two half columns and two full columns, topped with drum capitals that have a fluted appearance. 20th-century extensions to the rear incorporate what was formerly Smithwood Cottage. The building is of group value, contributing to the character of the Cranleigh conservation area.
