Description
Silk Mill Cottage is a late 16th-century building, initially a pair of cottages, later combined into a single house. It was re-clad in the 17th century and extended in the 18th and 20th centuries. The structure is timber framed and faced with galleted, coursed ironstone sandstone, with red and grey brick dressings and quoins. A rendered plinth is visible, and brick and tile-hung extensions are present under a half-hipped, plain tiled roof. A ridge stack is situated to the left of the centre. The first floor has three old casements and two leaded casements to the right, while the ground floor features three windows. A leaded glazed door, with an elliptical brick head and spindle decoration, is located to the left of the stack, alongside a further door to the right. Modern wings have been added to the rear. As one of the few surviving silk mills in the country, the building is of considerable historical interest.
