Description
The Church of St Peter is a Grade I listed building located in Tandridge, dating from the 12th century, with a 14th century nave and chancel. The south aisle was added in 1844, and the north aisle was constructed in 1874 by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The church is built of rubblestone with stone dressings and features a plain tiled roof, a square cedar shingled bell turret, and a broach spire topped with a gilt weathervane. The structure includes a nave with aisles, a gabled south porch, and a chancel to the east with a vestry to the north. There are two late 19th century leaded gabled dormers on the north and south sides of the nave roof, diagonal buttressing on the nave, and three gables at the west end. A Norman window is present in the chancel, while the rest of the windows are 19th century restorations. The south entrance features a 14th century ribbed and studded door.
Inside, the church has three bay nave arcades supported by octagonal piers, with hood moulds over the arches and scroll steps above the north arcade. The chancel arch has been restored. The nave roof beams date from around 1300 and are braced, with massive timbers supporting the turret to the west featuring uneven cross bracing. The chancel roof is painted and panelled, and there are early 20th century paintings in the chancel arch spandrels.
Notable fittings include a 19th century iron rood screen with twisted standards and scroll work decoration, and a square stone font with lobed corners on compound marble shafts attached to a chamfered centre stem. There are also two brass plates on posts in the tower commemorating George and Mary Clere, who died in 1787 and 1788.
