Description
This is a former inn with shops, now divided into separate cottages. The rear of the building dates to the 16th century, but the front was rebuilt in the 18th century and altered in the 19th century. The rear is timber-framed, while the front features a brick and render plinth with brown red and grey brick above. The roof is tiled, with a hipped section to the right and three ridge stacks, one on the left, one to the left of centre, and another at the rear right. There are seven dormers in the attic, each with a casement window and leaded glazing. A plat band runs across the ends of the ground floor, and a deep wooden eaves cornice is present. The first floor has ten mullion and transome windows, with segmental brick relieving arches over them; four windows are leaded to the right. The ground floor has a casement window to the left, two glazing bar sash windows to the centre beneath a projecting pent roof hood extending across the ground floor to the left, and three glazing bar sash windows to the right, each with a brick relieving arch. A planked door is set into the left end within a moulded surround with a cambered head relieving arch (number 3). A ribbed door is located to the left (number 2), alongside a further door to the centre (number 1). A half-glazed panelled door is to the right of centre, under a transome light with a flat hood supported by brackets (The Old Star). A 20th century brick single-storey extension is set back to the right end. The right-hand return front is three bays deep, with a wing projecting at a right angle to the rear right. It has two dormer windows and three leaded casement windows on the first floor. A central set of double doors is present. A further wing extends to the rear. The Cottages and Church House form an important part of the approach to the Church.
