Description
The Guest House is a house that has been converted into a library. It dates back to the 15th century and underwent restoration in the 20th century. The structure is timber framed, sitting on a rubblestone plinth to the left, with brick infill below the exposed framing and pebbledashed render infill above. The roof is made of Horsham slabs laid in diminishing courses.
This building features a "Wealden" type design with a two-bay recessed hall at the center. It has two storeys, with the end bays jettied on the first floor and supported by "flying" braces in the center. The windows have irregular diamond-pane leaded casements, including a six-light casement on the first floor to the left with diagonal mullions and a four-light window to the right. There is a prominent twelve-light mullioned and transomed window with stained glass inserts, located to the right of center and set under a billeted band that extends across the hall. A square bay window is present on the ground floor to the left, along with a four-light mullioned and transomed casement on the ground floor to the right. A planked door is situated to the right, set under an arched head and accessed by a flight of three steps.
To the right end, there is a single-storey brick extension with an attic that features pent roof dormers. Inside, the building includes a moulded dais beam and moulded capitals on the tie beam braces. The roof structure consists of massive braces and posts supporting a clasped purlin and windbrace roof, topped with a plain crown post.
