Description

Gatehouse Farm House is a house dating to the 16th century, with restoration work carried out in the 20th century. It is timber framed and sits on a rendered plinth, with brick infill below the ground floor and rendered infill above, revealing the exposed framing. The roof is thatched, hipped at the right end, with tiled ridges. The house is L-shaped, with a lower range extending to the rear right.

The main range has two storeys and four framed bays. A large stack is located to the left of centre, with an oversailing top, and a further stack is set into the end of the rear wing. The windows are irregular, with leaded casements in wooden frames, including a diamond-pane window on the first floor to the left of centre, and three windows across the first floor. Two square bay windows are located on the ground floor, each with a hipped roof. A gabled timber porch is situated to the left of centre, with an open upper section above brick walls, containing a panelled door. The right hand return front features a square bay window on the ground floor. A pent roof extension is present at the rear.

The interior retains considerable exposed framing. A ground floor room to the left features a stone fireplace surround, arched with chamfered and moulded corners, bearing the dates “1626 TS” in each spandrel. A large central spine beam is chamfered in the ground floor room to the right. The fireplace in this room has a wooden lintel with floral carving. A bread oven and salt cupboard are located to the right.
