Description

This building, originally a butcher's shop and dentist's surgery, dates back to the 15th century, with additions from the 17th century. It is a timber-framed hall house built on a stone plinth, with ironstone rubble and brick infill to the left return front. The front is underbuilt in whitewashed brick and has tile hanging above to the left and in the gables to the right. The roof is tiled, with a substantial inserted ridge stack to the left of centre.

The building has an L-shaped plan, incorporating a three-bay crosswing to the left, with a gable facing the street, and a two-bay hall to the north, featuring three jettied gables to the right. The exterior has two storeys. The left side of the first floor is jettied, featuring a moulded dragon post to the angle, while a brick plat band runs over the ground floor to the right. There's one leaded casement window in the left gable, three three-light leaded casements to the right (one under each gable), two glazing bar casements to the ground floor left, one four-light leaded casement under a cambered head to the right of centre, and a plate glass shop front at the right end. A stable-style planked door is located at the right end, along with a ribbed and studded door to the right of centre. A jettied first floor extends along the south, left-hand return front, supported by brackets, with rendered infill above the exposed framing.

The interior reveals considerable framing, with two arched service doorways and screens, brackets, and moulded beams remaining. The roof features a crown post braced in four ways.
