Description

Streete Court School, originally known as Ouborough, is a house that was converted into a school. It was built between 1775 and 1781 and underwent remodeling in the early 19th century. The exterior features incised render with angle quoins and a parapet that mostly hides the double pile roof, which is plain tiled with rendered end stacks. The building has two storeys above a basement and displays a dentilled cornice over the first floor. It has seven bays, with the center bay slightly projecting. The windows are glazing bar sash style, set in architrave surrounds with cill brackets on the first floor. The central window was originally tripartite but now has blocked margin lights, topped with a flat bracketed cornice hood. The ground floor windows are under dentilled flat hoods, and there is a stone balustraded balcony across the bottom. The entrance features central paired six-panel doors with a fanlight in an architrave surround, all beneath an Ionic portico that rises through one and a half storeys. This portico is supported by four Ionic columns and has an entablature with a balustrade above, accessed by a flight of four steps with iron lamps on the retaining walls. There is a one bay extension set back to the left end.

Inside, the entrance hall is stone paved and has egg and dart moulding on the coved, panelled ceiling. At the rear of the hall, there is a three-bay arched square pier entrance screen. In the 1870s, when it was a country house, it was owned by Sir George Gilbert Scott, who carried out many church restorations in the surrounding villages.
