Description

These 18th-century wrought-iron railings, gateway, and end piers form the front boundary of Halliford Manor. Likely dating from the mid-18th century, the railings are set atop a low brick plinth, partially stuccoed, and are supported by stuccoed piers. The railings themselves consist of square-section bars with spiked finials, and incorporate decorative panels to the standards. These panels feature scrolled, twisted bars and leafy, scrolled finials, with similar decorative ironwork above the central gateway. The end piers are square in section with string cornices and stepped pedestals supporting eagle finials. The presence of a 1744-dated clock in a former coach house associated with Halliford Manor suggests a possible date for the manor house, coach house, and front railings.
