Description

Riverhouse Barn is a barn that has been converted into a community centre. It likely dates from the early 18th century, with a roof tile dated 1721. The building features a timber frame with 20th-century weatherboarding on a rebuilt brick plinth and has a clay pantile roof. It consists of five bays, with an added side outshut on the right and an additional bay on the left. The central midstrey has a hipped roof and a double board door, while each side has 20th-century paired dark-glazed double doors. The outshut on the right includes a board door, and the added bay on the left has corrugated iron walls and roof, a panelled door, and a four-pane window with another above that breaks the eaves and rises as a gabled dormer. There is a stack at the junction with the barn. At the rear, there is an opposing cart entry with a double door. The addition on the right features a six-pane ground-floor window and a dormer above, similar to the left. The right return has a 20th-century two-light six-pane window in the gable.

Inside, the barn has a restored brick plinth and a restored timber frame with tall rectangular panels. The posts are unjowelled and have straight braces down to the mid rail and up to the tie-beams. The roof trusses are queen-strut, clasping through the purlins, and the old rafters show carpenter's marks, with later raking wind braces at the ends. The dated roof tile was found during the restoration work.
