Description

Chertsey War Memorial, located on Windsor Street outside the Church of St Peter, is a Grade II listed structure commemorating those lost in both World Wars. The memorial comprises a bronze sculpture depicting a serviceman in uniform holding his rifle in his left hand and his helmet aloft in his right. This sculpture stands upon a granite pedestal, which is itself set upon a three-stepped base. Bronze plaques adorn each face of the pedestal. The primary plaque lists the names of those from Chertsey who died in the Great War (1914-1919) with the inscription "TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF CHERTSEY WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR." A later plaque was added after the Second World War, inscribed with the names of those who lost their lives in that conflict (1939-1945). Further plaques on the remaining faces of the pedestal list additional names of the fallen, with the western plaque concluding "ALSO IN GRATEFUL RECOGNITION OF ALL THOSE WHO FOUGHT IN THE WAR."
