Description

23 and 25 Guildford Street is a house and shop dating from the first half of the 18th century, with later alterations. The building is timber framed with brick nogging and has a rendered front wall. It features a plain clay tile roof on the front pitch and a short parallel rear range, with old pantiles at the back. There are brick flanking stacks with an external breast on the south side of the front range.

The front elevation has two ground floor rooms, each with end stacks and separate external entries. There is a central rear staircase and a rear outshut, which is partly built up on the south side to create a separate range. The front has paired doorcases with entablatures and shallow hoods, ledged doors, a sash window with glazing bars on the left, and a three-light window with glazing bars on the right. The first floor has two windows, each with central vertical glazing bars only.

The rear wall includes a diagonal brace and straight windbraces supporting the roof, while the north gable of the built-up rear outshut is timber framed. Inside, the roof features straight windbraces, there are fireplaces with iron grates, and the pantry and scullery have quarry tile floors.
