Description

Cowley’s Almhouses are a complex of buildings founded in 1671 by Thomas Cowley, originally located in London Street. The central section, dating from 1788 and built at the expense of Richard Clark, comprises two storeys of red brick. It features two-light casement windows. A Victorian tiled canopy, supported by brackets, shelters the painted front doors. The roof is tiled, with chimney stacks at each end. To the right and left of the central section are matching one-storey wings, clearly of a later date. Each of these houses has a matching casement window and a door, both sheltered by a canopy, beneath a hipped, old tile roof.
