Description

The Coal and Wine Tax Post, located outside Counties End, dates from around 1861 and was made by Henry Grissell. This metal post stands approximately 4 feet high and features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above. It has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. The front displays the City of London shield, while the lettering on the pier reads '24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42', with the maker's name found on the rear. This tax post indicates the boundary where duty was payable, with the coal tax origins tracing back to the 1660s.
