Description

The Church of St Mary is a buff brick church built in 1828, with a predominantly red brick tower largely dating from the late 18th century. The tower is five stages high, constructed in English bond, and features a stone plinth, string courses, a modern coping and parapet, and corner buttresses. Each stage of the tower is slightly set off, with decorative elements on the upper stage. It has lancet windows, and large two-light Y-pattern windows in the belfry stage. A clock is located on the south side. Tablets on the west and south fronts of the tower suggest it was designed by Inigo Jones. The church's architect was John Burges Watson.

The church itself is a five-bay aisled nave with a plinth cornice, string course, crenellated parapet, and dividing buttresses. It has tall lancet windows with paired lights, Y-pattern heads, and cusping. A gabled south porch with a half-glazed door provides access. An oculus is located in the east gable, and the chancel is a lower one-bay aisled structure, with a projecting shorter bay and a later apse. The church is given Grade II* group value principally due to the quality of the tower.
