Description
This building, attached to No 43 at the rear, likely dates from the early 17th century and incorporates stout timbers salvaged from an earlier structure. It features a basement made of Reigate stone, with timber framing above that is partly filled with brick and partly hung with old pointed tiles, creating a reticulated pattern. The roof and part of the walls are now covered in corrugated iron. The building has 19th-century casement windows with glazing bars.
The original door space on the ground floor is indicated by a break in the sole plate, but it has been bricked up; the current entrance is a half-glazed door located in the basement. This alteration likely occurred around 1840, when a staircase was added and the grates were modernized. Originally, there was one room on each floor, but smaller side rooms have since been partitioned off, with one featuring imported 17th-century wainscoting. Inside, there is a stone fireplace with a moulded flattened Tudor arch. The roof structure includes queen-posts and side-purlins, and there is a large projecting chimney at the south end made of Reigate stone, characterized by big quoins and offsets, although it is now mostly rendered.
