Description

House. The south-east wing dates back to around 1360 and comprises two bays of an aisled timber hall. The north-west wing is a separately framed, 15th-century solar wing with three jettied bays. An early 17th-century ceiling was inserted into the former hall, and the house was re-clad in the 18th century and re-fenestrated in the 19th. The building is timber-framed; the front elevation is now plastered, while the other elevations are red brick, with some visible framing on the right return. The tiled roof has a late 16th-century brick stack to the solar wing and a 19th-century chimney inserted to the right. The house is two storeys high with three windows. The solar wing is gable fronted. Windows are horizontal sliding sashes and 19th-century casements. A central door is sheltered by a small hood.

Internally, the south-east wing has an early 17th-century ceiling on the ground floor, featuring chamfered spine beams and run-out stops to the chamfered floor joists. The first floor retains a crownpost of square section with down braces to the tie beam and braces up to the collar purlin, with passing braces below the midrail. The roof retains original rafters. The north-west wing has a ground-floor front room with solid ceiling beams of square section, with similar beams to the rear room. The first-floor principal bedroom has a crownpost roof with one arched brace visible, and original rafters to the roof. An 18th-century door opens to what was formerly a powder closet. The building also includes original floorboards.
