Description
This is a coal and wine tax post dating from around 1861, made by Henry Grissell. It stands approximately 4 feet high and features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier. Above the pier is a moulded capital band topped with a pyramidal shape. The front displays a City of London shield, and the lettering on the pier reads "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". The maker's name is located on the rear. This post marks the boundary where duty was payable on coal, a practice that dates back to the 1660s.
