Description
Charlotte Broadwood Flats is a former hospital, now converted into flats, built around 1864 by John Loxwood-King. The building is constructed of Bargate stone with red brick quoins and eaves courses, topped with a plain tiled roof. It features two storeys with gable ends and a central section that has one storey and attics, which are accentuated by two steeply gabled dormers with iron finials. Each dormer has three shouldered lights with diamond-pane leaded glazing, and there are smaller triangular dormers to the left of the centre where it meets the wing.
The building has two diagonal stacks on the left-hand return front, a ribbed and corbelled stack at the rear centre, and another stack at the rear right. A brick stringcourse runs above the ground floor and at the first floor of the end gables, with stone-dressed 'breathers' positioned above. The outer gables feature a 4-light stone-dressed lancet window on the first floor and a 5-light mullion and transomed window below. On the ground floor, there are two 3-light diamond-pane mullioned and transomed windows to the right of centre, flanking a trefoil-head inscription panel with a dedication in Gothic script.
To the right of centre, there is a gabled porch that is two storeys high and aligns with the outer gable. It has a single lancet window on the first floor and double doors with strapwork hinges, which are set beneath a moulded, arched head and hood moulding.
