Description
The railings at the front of Charlotte Broadwood Flats date from around 1864 and are made of Bargate stone blocks with brick quoins and edges on the piers. The design features paired gate piers with two smaller piers on either side and larger end piers, although the right end pier has been demolished. The central piers have stop-chamfered angles and are adorned with cusped and diagonal brick dentil courses, topped with steep gables. The central piers stand approximately 6 and a half feet high, while the flanking piers are lower. At the base of the railings, there are brick plinth walls that are about 3 and a half feet high, featuring two rows of spike finials. The double central gates have a trefoil arcade beneath stepped arched rails. There is a curved flank wall on the left end, but the right flank wall has been demolished. These railings are included for their group value.
