Description

Lower Lodge, a gate lodge dating to approximately 1870, stands around 300 metres south west of Cherkley Court. It is now a private dwelling. The lodge is constructed of stucco over brick, with a slate roof, and follows a cruciform plan. It is a single-storey symmetrical building, displaying a plinth and banded rusticated corner pilasters. The windows are round-headed, featuring moulded architraves with imposts and keystones. The roof is low-pitched with barge-boards. The east front presents a projecting central wing with coupled windows facing forward and single-light windows on the sides. This central section is flanked by round-headed doorways in the main range, with the doorway on the right being blind. A chimney sits on the crossing of the roof ridges. The sides of the lodge have similar windows. Attached to the rear is a large, modern conservatory, which is not considered to be of special interest. The lodge’s design corresponds with the lodge located to the north-east of Cherkley Court.
