Description
Mickleham Cottage is a building that features early 19th century and early 20th century additions to an earlier cottage. The cottage now faces the garden to the east and is two storeys high with a cellar, consisting of two parallel ranges and two windows, finished in roughcast. An early 19th century section has been added to the west, which serves as the entrance front. This part is made of brick, also two storeys tall, with three windows, a hipped slate roof, and overhanging eaves. The sash windows, which have intact glazing bars, include one window below with Gothic tracery, along with three similar windows at the back. The doorway is flanked by pilasters and has a glass passageway above it that extends towards the entrance gate further west. To the north and slightly set back is an early 20th century addition made of grey brick, also two storeys high, featuring five sash windows and a slate roof with overhanging eaves. Notably, Fanny Burney's sister, Mrs. Phillips, lived in this cottage, and Fanny Burney herself stayed here during the early months of 1793, getting married from the cottage in July of that year.
