Description

Flint Cottage is a late 18th century or early 19th century building located on Box Hill. It is two storeys high and features three windows on the south-west side and two windows on the south-east side. The exterior is faced with flints, complemented by red brick window dressings, quoins, and a stringcourse. The south-west front has a parapet made of flints, topped with two horizontal courses of bricks. There is an eaves cornice on the south-east front and a hipped slate roof. A trellised wooden porch leads up five steps to the entrance. This house was the residence of the writer George Meredith from 1889 until 1909, and he passed away there on May 18, 1909. The building is illustrated in "Old English Houses" by Hugh Braun.
