Description
The Burford Bridge Hotel, originally called the Fox and Hounds Hotel, is a long, L-shaped building dating from the early 19th century. It is two storeys high and has 12 windows, faced with roughcast, and has a slate roof with intact glazing bars. A projecting north wing, five windows wide, features a central gable. A modern verandah is situated on the ground floor. Historically, the hotel has notable connections: Nelson spent his final night in England here before travelling to Portsmouth for the Battle of Trafalgar, Keats wrote the latter portion of his poem "Endymion" here in 1819, and Hazlitt was also a guest.
Adjoining the main building to the south are contemporary stables, two storeys high with five windows, constructed of painted brick with a tiled roof and modern windows. A coach house projection is centred with a gable. At the southern end, a 17th-century barn, now used as a dining room, was originally located at Abinger and was re-erected here in 1934 by the late Lord Faver. A photograph of the barn is held in the National Monuments Record.
