Description
A group of three tomb chests is located approximately 20 metres south of the Church of St Mary and St Nicholas. These tomb chests date from the late 18th century to the early 19th century and are all made of limestone. The central tomb chest, which commemorates Thomas Cooper (died 1800) and his three infant sons, is the most prominent. It is a large square chest set on a square base, featuring a moulded plinth, panelled pilastered corners, oval side panels with moulded surrounds, and cherubs in the upper spandrels. The lid has a prominent reeded edge and a large gadrooned urn at the centre, with inscriptions on the panels on the north and west sides.
To the south, about 1 metre away, is a rectangular tomb chest commemorating Ann Cooper, the wife of Thomas Cooper (died 1782). This chest is mounted on a stone base and includes a moulded plinth, corner pilasters with cabled fluting, fielded side and end panels (with an inscription on the north side), and a lid with a moulded edge.
The tomb chest approximately 1 metre to the north commemorates Hannah, the wife of George Allen (died 1806). This rectangular chest is mounted on two steps that have railing sockets in the lower step. It features a moulded plinth, pilaster strips with horizontal fluting, fielded side and end panels (with an inscription on the north side), and a lid with a moulded edge.
