Description
The ruins of Betchworth Castle are the remains of a mansion built by Sir Thomas Browne in 1449. Alterations were made to the structure in 1705 and again in 1799 by the architect John Soane. At around the same time, Soane also designed stables and a dairy, which are associated with Castle Gardens in Betchworth Park. The castle was demolished in 1819. The ruins consist of stone rubble, ashlar, and red brick, with the remains of a garden terrace wall still visible below.
