Description

14 Castle Gardens is a former stable block for Betchworth Castle, built in 1798-1799 to a design by John Soane. It has been converted into cottages and is arranged around three sides of a quadrangle. The building is faced with flints and has a slate roof. It is primarily one storey high, except for the center of the north side, which features a two-storey projection with a round-headed arch over the first-floor window, flanked by pilasters and topped with an eaves bracket cornice and a hipped roof. A verandah with a slate roof has been added to the ground floor. A drawing by Soane shows Doric columns within the central entrance way supporting a cornice across the lintel. The flanking sections have four window bays, each with round-headed windows, one of which in each case has been converted into a door. The east and west wings of the quadrangle are similar, each with six window bays, where the southernmost bay projects. On the west side, two windows are blocked and one has been converted into a door, while on the east side, one window is blocked and two have been converted into doors. The south ends of these wings feature four pilasters and one round-headed window each. Adjacent to the east wing is a small early 19th-century house, number 14, which is two storeys high with two windows, a double hipped slate roof with a central stack, sash windows with glazing bars above, and casement windows below with slightly segmental arches. All windows have shutters.
