Description

Old Cottage is a house located in Dorking, originally built in the early 17th century with some alterations made in the early 19th century. The building has been extended to the north in the 19th century and to the south in the 20th century. The original structure is timber-framed with brick infilling, featuring a brick ground floor, a tiled roof, and an external brick chimney stack. Originally facing east, the main entrance is now on the west side.

The exterior of the east front showcases ground floor brickwork from around 1800 in Flemish bond, with some grey headers, while the first floor retains timber framing with visible curved braces. The roof is gabled and tiled, and there are two 19th-century casement windows. On the west side, the original part has a brick ground floor set on a stone plinth and a timber-framed first floor with curved windbraces. The external chimney stack on the northwest features 17th-century brickwork with 19th-century additions. This side also includes two 19th-century casement windows, one with a cambered arch on the ground floor, and a central 19th-century weather porch. The northern extension from the 19th century has stretcher bond brickwork on the ground floor and ornamental tile-hanging above, with two gabled dormers. To the south, there is a 20th-century one-storey brick extension and a conservatory.

Inside, the ground floor features a spine beam with a lambs tongue stop and diamond carving dated 1608, along with exposed floor joists and wall framing. There is some early 19th-century dado panelling, and a half-winder staircase leads to the upper floor, which also has exposed wall framing. The ceiling was raised in the 19th century. Overall, Old Cottage is a timber-framed two-bay end chimneystack house with a spine beam dated 1608.
