Description

A row of four headstones is located approximately 5 to 8 metres north of the north transept of the Church of St Mary and St Nicholas. These headstones date from the late 17th century to the mid-18th century and are aligned on a north-south axis.

The headstones commemorate the following individuals, from south to north:

(1) W. Wood, infant son of W. Wood, who died in 1697. This headstone is very small, featuring a carved swan-neck top and crossed bones, with the inscription in seriffed capitals.

(2) Johanna Wood, wife of William Wood, who died in 1699. This headstone has a shaped top carved with a skull-and-crossbones, and the inscription is also in seriffed capitals.

(3) Hanna Wood and her baby, who died in 1710. This headstone has a shaped top with a carving of an hourglass and skull-and-crossbones, along with an inscription noting that she died in childbed.

(4) William Hall, who died in 1751. This headstone features a scrolled top and carvings of an hourglass, urn, and other motifs.

At the time of the survey in 1988, the last two headstones were situated beneath a stout yew bush.
