Description
A group of four small monumental headstones and one footstone, all from the early 18th century, is located approximately 2 metres south-west of the porch of the Church of St Giles in Ashtead Park. These headstones are made of limestone and are arranged in a row.
From left to right, they commemorate:
(1) Elizabeth Bickley, who died in 1721. Her headstone has a shaped top and features an elegantly lettered inscription, including the couplet "Lo, Here Man's Fare Either Soon or Late."
(2) Ann Bickley, who died in 1719. Her headstone also has a shaped top and an elegantly lettered inscription, which includes the couplet "My eerly blast Bids no time waste."
(3) Margaret, the wife of Will Thorne, who died in 1704. This headstone has a swan-neck top and features an elegantly lettered inscription that includes a verse.
Approximately 2 metres west of these is the headstone and footstone of:
(4) John Watkin, who died in 1723. This headstone is similar to the others but includes a carved skull-and-cross-bones above the inscription, along with a small shaped footstone inscribed "JW 1723."
