Description
Churtgate House, also known as Church Gate House, is an L-shaped house located on Balchin's Lane in Wescott. The oldest part of the building is likely the east wing, which dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and features a gable with a pentice on its west side. There is a round-headed doorway beneath the pentice, flanked by brick pilasters and topped with a cornice, with additional brickwork above the doorway. The east wall has a chimney breast made of brick and stone rubble. The house has two storeys and one window in this section.
To the west, there is a red brick addition from the mid to late 17th century, which also has two storeys and an attic, featuring two windows and two hipped dormers. A stringcourse runs above each floor. The roof is tiled, and the windows throughout the building are three-light casements with diamond-shaped leaded panes. At the far west end, there is a modern addition with one window bay and a gable above, as well as a modern wing to the north. A photograph of the house is available in the National Monuments Record.
