Description

Taw Cottage, originally Tawside Cottage, is a late 19th-century building that obscures an earlier timber-framed open hall house, probably dating from the mid-16th century. It is two storeys high, with a ground floor of red brick and a first floor clad in tiles. The roof is tiled with bands of fishscale tiles, and there is a modern chimney stack. The first floor has two gabled casement windows, while the ground floor features casements with cambered head linings. There are two doorcases with gabled weatherboards.

The building began as a four-bay timber-framed open hall house with an internal jetty and two floored ends. The jetty remains visible, but the hall was floored over in the 17th century. Original features include exposed curved braces, part of the original lath and plaster infilling, and inglenook fireplaces.
