Description

The Barracks comprises two dwellings, dating from the 17th century, situated on Westcott Street, Westcott. The building is two storeys high and originally had four windows, though the arrangement is more complex due to projecting sections. It is constructed of sandstone rubble, with red brick dressings around the windows, a string course separating each window bay, and quoins marking the corners. Four gables are present. The two northernmost window bays and gables project forward; the northernmost projects further and is of a higher elevation, featuring an attic storey with curved braces framing the attic window. The roof is covered with Horsham slabs. The windows are casements with segmental brick heads, wooden mullions, and diamond-shaped leaded panes. The southernmost window bay features five lights, the northernmost has two tiers of four lights, and the others have three lights. The northernmost gable has a string course above the first floor, rising above the window, and incorporates a three-light window in the attic with a curved panel above it. A chimney breast is situated on the north wall. The window bay adjacent to the northernmost one contains a round-headed arch leading to a recessed porch that originally housed the doorways for both houses, though one of these doorways has been blocked.
